Sam Barlow High School has 5 bands; a symphonic, concert, freshman, jazz, and stage band. Director of Bands Paul Nickolas directs the Symphonic Band, Freshman Band, Stage Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Bands.

There are over 200 students enrolled at Sam Barlow in the bands. The bands at Barlow have won many awards for excellence in district and also OSAA competitions. Band students at Sam Barlow that attend All State, All Northwest, or place at State competitions get inducted onto the Wall of Fame.

Once again, selections were tough.  Id like to thank all who put time and effort into the audition.  Whatever the results, feel proud of the work that you put in and that you belong to a large successful band community!

Those students accepted into commencement band will be expected to rehearse for commencement on Monday,
 June 12th during period 5.  New members to Symphonic Band will be excused from their present 5th period class.  You will also be required to attend the 2017 Barlow Commencement on Tuesday, June 13th.  Uniform will be black pants, white shirt, black socks and shoes.  The schedule will be distributed in class.



Congratulations 2017 District Soloists!
On Saturday, February 25th, over 30 Barlow Instrumentalists performed at the OMEA District 2 solo and ensemble festival.  All students did and amazing job!  The following were additionally honored as being recommended to participate or be an alternate in the OSAA State Solo or OMEA State Small Ensemble Festival later this year.  Congratulations to all that participated!

50th Anniversary and Commissioned Music

For Sam Barlow High School's 50th Anniversary, composer Kevin Walczyk has been commissioned to write a celebratory piece of music to commemorate our anniversary. This project will be competed and the music performed in 2018. Please visit the Commissioned Music Project for more details.





Congratulations 2016 Symphonic Band!
On Saturday, May 14th, our Symphonic Band performed at the OSAA State Band Competition and placed second. It was truly an amazing performance by the band. Please select the following link to learn more: Barlow State Competition.

Paul Nickolas
Paul Nickolas began to teach at Sam Barlow in 1999, after having completed a Masters in Wind Conducting degree at Indiana University. A born and raised New Yorker, Mr. Nickolas attended Indiana University and completed a Bachelor of Music Education degree with high distinction in 1994. He spent 3 successful years of band directing in Morris, Illinois before returning to Indiana University for his Masters Degree in conducting.

Mr. Nickolas and his wife Amy live in Gresham with their daughters Julia & Molly, son John, and two pets.
